THE PONGAROA MAIL.
The Pahiatua paper makes a vigorous attack upoa.tho Postmaster-General because the latter has promised to reconsider the question of the Pongaroa mail service at the end of twelve I months. , The -paper . suggests that some underground engineering has been going. on. Such a. suggestion is at once ridiculous. The facts are that the settlers of Pongaroa, Rakaunui, Waterfalls and tho intervening districts desire moro effective communication with Masterton and Wellington. With this end in view, they "have"petitioned the Postmaster-General to have the mails conveyed via Eketahimn. An official from the Head Office has been sent through the district, and his report, we understand, strongly favours the Eketahuna route. The only immediate difficulty is that the road from Eketahuna is not metalled right through, and the service would b'o conducted under difficulties in the winter. Surely the PostmasterGeneral is acting in the" best'hi tcosts of the Dominion when he accepts the advice of his responsible officers, ■ in preference of PaJiiatua. tradesmen, and-promises to do justice by the baokblocks at the earliest opportunity.
