THE WEATHER.

WORST FOR THIRTY YEARS.

SHEARING SERIOUSLY DE-

LAYED

■ The cold southerly bui'tcr that raged in Masterton at the latter end of last week caused a. complete cessation of .shearing and other farm" operations in the district. A representative of the Age interviewed «a number of farmers on Saturday, and gleaned from them that this is the worst season that has been experienced for over thirty years. "I do not remember a season so bad," said one of them. "Last year was bad enough, but this v ar takes the rake. During the last six weeks there have been only fifteen, days on which shearing could be carried on." Another stated that he bad been able to shear only on live days during the month of November. Reports from the outlying stations indicate that shearing will not be completed until well "into January. At Braneepeth, which is one of the largest sheds in the district, operations are not yet more than half through. Some of the .smaller stations have cut out, but in a great many only a day or two's work has been dune, while others have not yet been able to make a start, owing to the shortage of shearers. The position in the FortyMile Bush is said to be even worse than in the Wairarapa.
