PONCAROA MAIL SERVICE.

RETAINED BY PAHIATUA FOR ANOTHER YEAR.

A QUESTION OF METALLING

Mr G. R, Sykes, M.P., received the following telegram from'the Post-master-General, on Saturday last:

"After careful 'consideration, on further report made by officer detailed to go over the two roads, have decided, if satisfactory arrangements can be made, to continue the existing route for another year. I am prepared to reconsider question of route a year hence, if in meantime the metalling has been done on PongaroaEketahmia road.—R, HEATON RHODES, Wellington."

In conversation with an Age reporter, Mr Sykes said that it seemed to him that the Minister's communication was very encouraging. It would appear that the only reason, why the service was not diverted to Eketalmna this' year was on account of a. doubt concerning the road in the winter time. Mr Sykes pointed out that the road would be metalled to the Akitio boundary before the coming winter, and he was determined to get a subsidy, for the section in the Masterton County, so that a metalled road right-through coiild.be assured, before the winter of 1914.
