Mr Ash-Mead Bartlett reports from Constantinople that on Monday he rode the length of the Turkish position. He found the infantry behind the forts drilling in open order exercises, close order formation, bayonet charges, and rifle practice.

The spectacle of a whole army learning to shoot, within a few miles of an enemy was unique in modern war.

A cold spoil has diminished the cholera, though there are hundreds of victims daily. Mr Bartlett states that it is calculated that 17,000 have died from cholera, and only 8 per cent of those attacked have been saved.
