MARKET GARDENS.

Mastortonians depend almost entirely for their supply of vegetables upon the industry of the Chinaman. Why is this? Are the labour laws so restrictive that an European cannot compete with a Mongolian ? Or is it that the peoplo prefer vegetables grown by a Chinaman to those produced by a white man? We refuse to believe tliat the latter is the case. Then why have we no European market gardeners to speak of in the district? We hear a great deal from the labouring classes about the necessity for maintaining a "white New Zealand." But w? see 110 move on tho part of the labourer to compete with the Chinaman, and no desire on his part to refrain from patronising the "Chow." Where is hi s consistency?
