THE CHURCHES.
The new moderator of the Presbyterian Assembly was pessimistic in his address at Wellington concerning the spiritual life of the Churches. He stated an accepted truth when he said, in effect, that the desire for the Church and what is known rs "Godliness" is not what it used to be. What is the reason for this indifferonco to religion? It cannot bo that the wolves in sheeps' clothing have scared all the sheep from the fold. There are other causes which the Church would do well to strive and seek out. Has not higher education and enlightenment hsd a tendency to destroy many of the teachings of tho Church? Are not people coming to regard tho Church us a veneer of respectability rather than a place for sincere worship? Are not tho teachings of the New.Testament' too ofte.i sacrificed to the exigencies of fiuanee? Have wo not too many Churches for the people? These are questions which occur to the lay mind, and which the clergy may be left to answer.
