HARDWOOD TIMBERS.
We cannot understand why the present Government, following the bad example of its predecessors, should continue to place an embargo upon Australian liardwoeds used by local bodies in the construction of bridge?. It is well-known that these timbers are more durable, and therefore mora economical than any that are grown in New Zealand. Moreover, the whole of our available timber supply will bo required for building purposes. We maintain that the Government has no right to discriminate in the matter of railway freights. against imported hardwoods that are used for bridge-building, for tho extra tax comes out of the pockets of taxpayers who are doing yeoman service to the country by developing its resources. The Government should not only remove the railway surcharge; it should import the hardwoods itself and sell them to local bodies at cost price-, ,
