AN ESCAPED PRISONER

WHANGAREI, Last Night

Huston, the escaped prisoner, wai recaptured by Detective Hollis and Constable Douglas this afternoon on the foreshore, 16 miles from Whangarei.

Tho capture was cleverly effected, Huston felling into a trap which had been laid for him. He had previously been seen on the opposite .side of the harbour, and tho information was given to the police, who followed the clue, but avoided revealing themselves fearing the escapee would take to the dense bush, where he could '• easily conceal himself; The police crossed tho harbour, knowing Huston 4o bo in the vicinity. A confederate * was bribed to cross the harbour in a boat. Huston eventually appeared, and accepted the boatman's offer to ferry him across., On disembarking Jh?..was promptly pounced on by the officers. Huston admits that the recapture was smart, adding that in the course of his long career, he had broken gaol twelve times.

Sergeant Moore proceeded by special launch to Marsden. Oil arrival at Whangarei a large crowd gathered on the wharf to catch a glimpse of Huston. This was antfcfpate3 by Serjeant Moore, "who brought the launch up a side ereek, and took the prisoner the hack way to the cells. Huston appeared vorv ■ weak and footsore, causing the sympathy of the onlookers by his dejected appearance. Elaborate caution is being taken to keep him in custody.
