OBITUARY.

SIR WILLIAM JUKES STEWARD, M.L.C. The death occurred in Wellington , yesterday afternoon of tho Hon Sir t William jukes Steward, M.L.0., after a brief illness. The deceased gentleman was horn at Reading, Berkshire, on January 20th, 1841, and was mar- ( riixl in 1873. Ho was educated at King Edward VI. Grammar School, Ludlow, and Dr Benham's Commercial , School, Gloucester. He came to New Zealand by the ship Mersey in 1862, and was engaged in commercial pursuits in Christchurch until 1867. From 1867 to 1900 he engaged in journalism, as editor or proprietor of thoNorth Otago Times, Waimate Times, and Ashburton Mail and Guardian. Ho took an active interest in th& Volunteer Movement, and was major commanding tho North Otago Volunteer district from 1873 to 1879. Ho was member for Oamaru County in tlio Ot3go Provincial Council in 187.1\76, and became a member (without j portfolio) of tho Provincial Executive. { Ho, was returned to the House of Representatives for Waitaki in 1871, fjnd had sat almost continuously ever since, retiring at the last election and subsequently being elevated to* the Legislative- Council. He was of the House from 1891 to 11803, and .had served on the Federation, Friendly Societies and . Tariff Royal Commissions. He was for three years Mayor of Oamaru, and for some tinio a member of the South Canterbury Education Board. In 1904 b» published a book on "Parliamentary Procedure in New Zealand," and in 1906 a book of poems entitled, "The Vision of Aorangi and Other Poems.*' Tlie Legislative Council adjourned yesterday afternoon out of respect to the memory of the deceased, «nd the Premier intimated that ho would aslr tho Houso to adjourn to-day.
