DODGING RESPONSIBILITY.
From the statement made m the House of Representatives by the Minister of Public Works last night, it would seem that local authorities in the Dominion have been unwilling to accept the responsibility for the maintenance of roads constructed by the Government and afterwards declared county roads. The result has been that the i&ovemment has had t® find a considerable eum erf money to k@ftp these roadi is order. W® ©*n-
not blame the County councils altogether in this matter, for they hiwe not been consulted by the Government in regard to the necessity for road#. Indeed, in some cases we have reason to think that political roads have been made —roads that were not required for the development of tile country. The new Minister will probably see the necessity for making an alteration in the system by which grants are made for roads.
