A HORRIBLE DEED.
The world will be profoundly shocked to-day to read that Mr Theodore Roosevelt, ex-President of the United. States Republic, and a candidate for "the Presidency at the election now in progress, has been the cruel victim of a blood-thirsty assassin. Mr R-oose-velt ha* been one of the greatest men of the present century. He has done more to crush, monopoly and stamp out the erils of tbe "graft" system than any living man in tho
States. Although his chances for re election to the Presidency were not the brightest, owing to the split in tiu Republican camp, his great personality and his humane interests haw moved millions of people to worship the very ground upon which he walks. That he should have been shot down like a dog by a human fiend under the guise of Socialism, is too horrible to contemplato. (Since the above was in type the cable tells us that the wound is not likely to prove fatal, and that the act was that of a individual.)
