THE ANTARCTIC EXPLORERS

SURVEYING THE COAST. (Bp Trleoranh —Frtut A Moriation.) CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Lieutenant Pennell, of the BritishAntarctic expedition ship Terra Nova, has returned from Admiralty Bay, where, with other members of the ship's company, he has been engaged surveying. The area surveyed was eight miles long and three wide. Over ten thousand soundings were taken, which showed the depth of the whole bay to be from 20 to 25 fathoms. The bottom is of mud, with a few' sandy patches, but there, are no outlying dangers. The party also located the Hope Rock, two miles off Okuri Bay, and same distance from Tangi Point, D'Urville Lsland. The departure for the Antarctic will probably be ab'-ut the end of December. Commanders Evans and Francis Drake leave Sydney on the 26th for Lyttelton.
