AN INTERESTING POINT.

An interesting point is raised in a report from Dr Gill-nth, Administrator of the Northern Territory. The efficiency of the workers at Darwin was represented to be 30 per cent, below .that in the southern States, and lie had set out to find the reason. Accordingly he made tests, and took temperatures at all hours of the day, and sounded the men concerning the best hours to work. He found the [ consensus of opinion was that one j hour in the morning was worth an hour and a half in the afternoon, and came to the conclusion that in, the interests of efficiency he would get as much work done in the morning as possible. He then made the hour to bey;in work 7 o'clock. Following thi-s, the hotel proprietors stated that they cou'd not get their cooks to start work in time to give breakfast at 6.20 a.m., and as they could do this by 6.50 a.m., it was agreed to mako the 'liours 7.30 to 4. with half an hour off for lunch., Those were made the hours, and the men who began work at 8 instead of 7.30 would be docked half an hour. The men have "held-several meetings to discuss the working hours, and a resolution has been passed stating that they will hot ,start work before 8 in the morning. It is understood that if it is found that they are docked for time Jost by turning up, at 8 instead oi 7.30 a general strike will be declared.
