SIMPLE SEMPLE
MAKES AN ASSERTION. TO HARDEN THINGS UP. (Tin Te'earaph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. Speaking at Petone to-night, Mr R. Semple said the London sharethe Waihi Company were desirous of introducing kaffirlabour in place of the miners on strike. The Government had been approached, with tho object of getting the polltax removed; but had declined. The Federation of Lalmur now believed the London shareholders contemplated paying the poll-tax and sending-out kaffirs to work the mines. The men were prepared to fight, for the next ten years.

Tntervitnved concerning Mr Semple's statement that the London shareholders of the Wailii Company had' approached the Government with a view to getting the poll-tax removed, so that kaffirs could be employed to work the mines, the Hon W. F. Massey said: "Tt is an absolute falsehood, that is all I have to say."
