The game was commenced in a sea of mud and water, but despite these disavantages wiiih reully excellent work was witnessed, the greasy ball and uncertain footing not putting the Wellington side much about. The local, rearguard combination was too superior for the southerners, this factor being responsible for the -de i eisrve defeat.

In tho third qunr tor Poverty Bay puts on two tries, .scored !>y McOoll and R viand. Aho last quarter was very willing. a.nd two of the Hastings men were ordered off for making offensive remarks to tho referee. No further scoring resulted, and Poverty Bay retained tho Shield by 0 points to nil.
