GRAFT IN AMERICA
INQUIRY IN NEW YORK. (Received September 12, 12.10 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 11. Mr Gaynor, Mayor of New York, giv_ ing evidence "at the investigation 'regarding charges of graft against the police, admitted that 3,000,000 dollars a year in graft had been paid to the police by the liquor interests. Recently this had been entirely surpassed. While the force was certain to contain a- proportion of incompetent, untrustworthy, men, the genera] level of efficiency wis higher than- ever fore. He admitted that burglary insurance rates in New York had jumped 3-3 per cent, recently.
