His Excellency .the Governor will arrive in Masterton by tho mail train from Wellington this morning, and will probably return in the afternoon. Mr W. D. Watson, of Masterton, will jiidffo harness horses and ponies, and Mr> W. McKenzie Shorthorn cattle at the Hawke's Bay show nexl month.
Yesterday's arrivals at the Masterton Club Hotel include Mr and Mrs Hope Lewis. Mr Beisley (Auckland). Messrs Wycherley, Fallover, Martcll. Badlev, Gibb, and Absolon.
One of the Paris papers, the Matin, reports that the Pope is daily growing weaker. No strangers in the Vatican are now admitted to,, the Pope's Mass, for the reason that his Holiness often "celebrates it while :n a sitting position.
The death occurred on Saturday afternoon of Mrs Louisa Bead, of Selby House, Adelaide Road, Wellington. The deceased lady, who was 'the widow of tho late Mr M. Read, for many years governor of tho Terrace Gaol, was born in London on February 11th, 1823, and was therefore in her ninetieth year. She arrived in the Dominion in the shin Alma in 1557. Mrs Read is survived by six sons and 0110 daughter. I]lh> death occurred at Grevtown yesterday of Mr A. .F. Muir, an old identity of the Wairarapa, who has carried on a bookselling and stationery business for a number of years. Tho deceased, who was fifty-four years of age, arrived in Greytown thirty-*, two years ago. He was the youngest son of the late Mr James Muir, of tho proprietors of the Wellington Independent, and brother of Mr Allan Muir, proprietor of the Poverty Bay Herald. He leaves a widow five .sons and five daughters.
