LADIES' HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP
WAIRAJRAPA SECURES A WIN. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) _ CHRISTCHURCH/ Last Night. The second day's play of the New Zealand Ladies' Hockey Tournament was carried through at Sydenham Park to-day in perfect weather. Tho grounds bad much improved, and tho conditions for play were much better than on Saturday. The matches played resulted as follows: B SECTION. Canterbury A 7 v. West Coast 0. Wellington 1 v. Hawke's Bay 5. Wanganui 4 v. Buller. A SECTION. Nelson 3 v.' Poverty Bay 2. Taranaki 2 v. Otago 2. Manawatu 0 v. Wairarapa 2.
Tho match Canterbury A v. West Coast resulted in an easy win for tho former by seven goals to nil. The West Coast played up well in. the early stages "of the game, but tho superior play of their.opponents woro them down.
The Taranaki-Otago match, which ended in n draw, was fair all tho way through. Otago's hitting did not seem to bo up to Saturday's display, although, at times some very fine individual shots were got'off just when they were most wanted. The Otago girls were inclined to lose their places, and much off-side ulav was witnessed. Taranaki. marked the ball'well, and the players supported each other excellently. TheAVanganui v. Buller match contained plenty of incident, one of the first events being the temporary disablement of the captain of the Buller team (Miss Greenland). Play was lively throughout, and though Wanganui had far and away the best of it, Buller put up a,very spirited defence.
The Manawatu. r. Wairarapa was less interesting. The play on both sides was uneventful and Wairarapa ended by getting 2 goals to Manawatu's nil. Goals were netted for Wairarapa by Misses O'Leary and Gallon. The match between Nelson and Poverty Bay provided some of the fastest and cleanest hockev the tourney is likely tn show. Nelson played better than on Saturday. Tlio match, between Wellington -ird 'Vvl-e's Bay was also fast. Hawke's Biv '''irwod to better advantage than on Sat"'-rlnv. some combination bavin" - ''"en added to the individual skill shown. The game was more oven than the score would suggest, and un+il almost the end it, seemed a possibility that Wellington 1 might equalise matters.
