WELLINGTON EDUCATION BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Wellington Education Board was beld yesterday,- all members being present with the exception of Mr W. G. :Bucha.nan, who-was engaged at Parliament. -
On the motion of Mr A. W. Hogg, seconded by Mr Vile, Mr R. Lee was elected Chairman of the Board. In acknowledging the compliment Mr Lee stated that the business of the Boird had been conducted during the last twelve months in a most harmonious manner."
The statement of accounts showed a credit balance at date of £305 12s.
The Government intimated that n grant of £SOO had been made for the erection of a hoav school at Masterton.
The Education Department intimated that a chart on insect and fungoid pests would be supplied to each school undertaking a course in agriculture.— The offer was accepted with thanks. The report of the Education Commission wns received, together with the thanks of the Commission for the n.s<si!?tanco rendered by officials of the Board.
The Wellington Teachers' Institute -wrote, emphatically protesting against recent appointments to masterships at Island Bay .and Grevtown, and asking for a definite policy owhich appointments are made.—The. communication was received.
A petition from Aiki Aiki. asktW that a school he provided for the children of Aiki Aiki Valley, was held over for a. report from other schools in the district which are interested. The Masterton Hich School Educational Committee (Messrs H. C. Robinson, A. T. Thompson, Dr Cowie. and T. Wagg, with power to add to their number) forwarded a request for information regarding parents and pupils attending the Ma&terton District High School.—lt was decided that the matter be referred to. the Masterton District High School Committee A petition from settlers for the establishment of a school at Tawaha was referred to the Inspectors for further information.
Mr A. H. Vile asked leave to move a resolution as a matter of urgency, but eventually gave ,notice to move. "That in the event of legislation being introduced this session in the direction of extending the scheme of agricultural instruction, the Minister of Education be requested to adopt the recommendation of the Education Commission, that as soon as the attendance in the secondary department of a district high school in an agricultural or pastoral district reaches an average of eighty (this Board recommends fifty) an. agricultural high school should he established on the lines of those recently set up in Victoria and New South Wales."
Tlie following grants were made for Wairarapa schools:—Greytown, blinds. £lO 10s; Hukamii, repairg to tool house, £1 10s; Opaki, repairs, metalling. £3 10s; Scarborough, refund to headteaoher 15s. and subsidy on donation for ground improvements, £2 13s 6d; Mauricevillo West, repairs lavatory, etc., £2 10s; Mangamairi. gates and repairs, fencing, etc., £1.4 10s: Kaitara., new latrines, £35; Gladstone, metalling around residence, £6;; Parkvale,' subsidy ground improvements, £2 10s. It was decided to inform the Pongaroa Committee that the paddock attached to tho residence is for the use of the teacher. A request from the Hakanui Committee for conveniences was declined in' the meantime, pending further consideration. Tt was resolved that tender* be invited for the. lease of the education reserve at Alfredton for a. period of seven Tears.
The foNowing tenders were accepted : —Erection of school at Wbnveama, T. Emery. £387; removal of galleries, extra light, etc., Fernridge, Beale and Co., £4.9 17s.
