CHINESE PREMISES RAIDED
HEAVY FINES IMPOSED,

> GREYMOUTH, Last Night
As the result of a raid on the Chinese quarters on 19th inst., thirty-five Chinese and two Europeans appeared before the court to-day. Quong Bung occupier of the house was fined £25 for keeping a common, gaming house. Notice of appeal was given. Yip Duck was convicted of a similar offence and fined £4O. The cases against one European and four Chinese were dismissed, the remainder being fined £2 each.
ASSAULT ON POLICE

AUCKLAND, Last Night
While a constable was arresting a man for drunkenness on Saturday night, he was attacked by the crowd, and somewhat roughly handled, but he got his prisoner to the station. In' court this morning Alfred Aiken, the .only one of the crowd secured, was sentenced to two months' imprisonment, with hard labour for assault.
