A SHOCKING FATALITY

ENGINE-DRIVER CRUSHED TO A PULP. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) TAJHAPE, Last Night. A terrible fatality occurred at Rangataua on Thursday afternoon. Th» Powell Process Company's bush drawline engine, with trucks carrying four logs to'the mil!, was travelling down a steep grade, when, owing to tbo slippery rails, it got out of hand and rapidly increased its velocity. After covering half a mile, and when rounding a curve, the brakesman was shot off'into ttio scrub. He was unhurt, thought he sustained a great shock. Two chains further on the engmo jumped the rails, and the heavy load crashed into the engine, the logs smashing driver Percy Small and killing him instantlv. His body was frightfully mutilated. The engine pushed ahead for half a chain, and then overturned, the logs going two. chains further. The trucks were smashed to matchwood, the rails torn in), and p;rcat havoc effected. The deceased was single, and aged 20. His parents live at Nelson, whither nist body was taken to-day in charge of his brother, who is relieving stationmaster at Rongataua. An inquest was held, when a verdict of "accidental death" was returned, no blame being attachable to anyone.
