DEATH BY DROWNING.
During th» last ton years, no fewer than 1737 lives have been lost by drowning in tho Dominion of Now Zealand. Of cour&o the whole of this number cannot bo attributed to accident, but it is safe to say that a large percentage of them can. The moral to be drawn is that it is the duty of every parent and every schoolteacher to sco that tho art of swimming is taught to tho rising generation. Tho writer of this article asked the headmaster of a school in one of the bays of Wellington recently if he Was teaching his scholars to swim. "I would if I could," was the repiy, "but unfortunately cannot swim myself." It is surely a reproach upon our education system tint tho art of swimming should be so sadly neglected. One of these days it will be made compulsory.
