THE DUTY ON BOOTS.

New Zexland has imposed a fairly stiff duty 011 footworn-, and yet wo imported' last year ££70,000 worth of boors. Some will argue that this indicate;, the necessity for an increase in the protective duty. We take an- entire!; different view. \Vc maintain that if tho boot manufacturers of this Dominion cannot compete with England and America, after freight and duty havo been paid, they should cease manufacturing, allow their employees to take up some employment moro profitable to themselves and the State. and seek for the removal of the duty entirely from footwear. The industriei which require fostering in this country are the primary industries. And so that those engaged in these indws tries may bo ah! e to compete with other countries, the cost of living should be reduced as far as po-sib'e. It is absurd to keep up the price of such common articles of use as bootv and shoes for the sak e of finding, work for a few hundred people who might be moro profitably employed in other industries.
