NO HOPE FOR ROOSEVELT

NEW YORK. August 16

Mr Hilles, Chairman of the Republican National committee -forecasts that in the Presidential campaign fiftyfour States with an electoral vote <jf 385 will vote for the Republicans, as against feen States with 111. vo'-e* favouring the- Democrats. Four States are doubtful. There is, he says, no State in accord with tho Roovcvelt--ians.

Dr Woodrow Wilson opened his Presidential campaign in New Jersey, fie attacked the Republican tarift'-makrig methotk', and pointed out the benefit to the mercantile marine from the Panama Canal. He did not refer in the Canal tolls' dispute. The omission to do so is regarded as significant.
