When "Phil" Newbury, the famou? New Zealand "tenore robusto," sang the tenor soli in "Israel in Egypt" with the Melbourne Philharmonic Society recently, the Age stated: — "Taking the soloists first, the Philharmonic Society was lucky to secure such an artist for the tenor music as. Mr Philip Newbury." Lovers of music may therefore consider themselves lucky to learn that this great artist will appear and sing some of the choicest items in his repertoire next Juesday. Prior to leaving London on his tour of the world Mr Newbury sang the tenor solos with the Royal Choral Society, in the Royal Albert Hall with Albani and Kirkby Lunn. The Standard states: "Mr Philip Newbury, the New Zealand tenor, shared'tho honours of the evenwith his distinguished colleagues. His beautiful voice sounding, like a silver bell throughout the vast area. Nothing but praise can be said of his exquisite, singing." "The Golden Legend" was given by the Auckland Choral Society, the services of Mr Newbury being retained at a record fee. The assisting soloists being Miss Rosina Buekman and Mr Larssn, ot Sydney. The Auckland Herald staves:- "The complete solo success in 'Tlie Legend' was undoubtedly achieved by Mr Philip Newbury, the wellknown tonorc robusto." At the recent performance of the "Cavalleria Rustic-ana" in Wellington with Mr "Newbury in the big role of "Turiduu" a recorcl audience 'attended, 23C0 seats were reserved, and hundreds were turned away unable to obtain admission. Madame Emily Spada was specially engaged as principal soprano at tlm Tonic Sol Fa .Jubilee at the Crystal Palace, London. A chorus of four thousand singers from all parts of the United Kingdom took part in this memorable event. It is stated that the largest audience on record attended, 30,000 people being present. The London Times stated: "Madame Spada sang the soprano solos in Hiller's 'Song of Victory' with distinguished success." ' The Telegraph stated: "Madame Spada's beautiful voice sounded like a linnet's durinc? the. pauses of the wind." On Tuesday a programme of popular operatic oratorio and ballad music will he presented, including the great "Miserere" scene from "II Trovatoro." This is the only opportunity of hearing thesn distinguished artists, as they proceed direct to Dunedin to take nart in an oratorio festival with the Dunedin Choral Society on September 4th and oth. Seats can now W reserved at the Dresden. It behoves a 1 lover* of music to attend and 'ieir New Zealand's tenor. Philip Newbury, now in the zenith of a great career.
