IMPERIAL COMBINATION IMPOSSIBLE. (Received August 5, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, August 5. Mr R. C. Lehmmm (a member of London Punch staff since 1890, and ex-captain of Leander Rowing Club), considers that British sport, at its host disapproves of an Empire team for Olympic games. Rival countries treat sport as a profession, and specialise at an enormous cost, ln;t English representatives went to Stockholm as sportsmen.
Mr Lehmann considers it is impossible to arrange an Empire rowing team, because of the costly preliminary trials at remote places. Ho 'lid not believe it possible to form a combined crew of Englishmen and colonials. Ho disapproves of the conditions governing Olympia, and suggests England's retirement.
