HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR.
The announcement that .His Excellency the Governor (Lord M'ington) is to withdraw from hiV* gubernatorial office in order that he might join a Civtfl Service Commission in India, appears to have goal foundation. Prima facie, thdrefor'o, the interests of New Zealand are to ho sacrificed to those of India. The precedent which wil'l be cstab&hed by the retirement of the Governor m the early stages of his administration may 'not bo a serious one; ibut" the Dominion has a (right to know that une pretext is sufficient, and that no ciroumetance has arisen within Now Zenland which has caused His Excellency to desire retirement, An assurance upon this point would relieve the public of a "little anxiety.
