The continued denudation cf the bush from the hillsides adjoining the Wanganui River led to a huge landslide on Sunday, just below Atene. The earth on the hillside became soaked with the rains, and, without the (bush to hold it, dipped into the river, piling up -ths water to -such 1 an extent as to reach mere 'than half -way acrcos. At first it was- thought that the obstruction would block .the steamer ecrvie?. but the fear v:as groundless, though great care lig.> to be exercisedin ina-king the passage through the narrow lane cf swift-rumi-ing -water that is left. FortwnaK the river 'has already commenced to scour, and the obstruction is not likely <to be .permanent.
A large number of slips are icported on the hilksides in the back country. The -roads are in a terrible tte Ahuaahua Road in ..particular, many sections having slipped away.
