A QUESTION OF COMMITTEES

BEFORE THE BOROUGH COUNCIL. At the meeting of the Master-ton Borough Council last evening, Cr Fjwingtoif moved that a Paik Committee be appointed. He was sure that good work could be done in connection with the Park, as had been done by the .previous Committee. Cr Flanagan- seconded the motion. Cr Candy a-sked what powers the Committee would have.

The Mayor explained that the work of the Committee would be to enquire into matters connected with the .Park, and made recommendations to -the Council. ' It would rest with the Council whether those recommendations would be carried out-or <not. Cr Donald ,said that' he was opposed to .the -setting up of a Park Committee. He would, however, favour the appointment of a Gas Committee. Or O'Leary thought that a Gas Committee should be set up. He would, however, .support Cr Ewington's tmotion.

' The 'Mayor did not think that the business of tfhe Council could be? done better 'by a .committee than 'by -the .Co'unciT as a whole, Ife tnongKt that there was more liarrnicaiy in- the Council without Committees. He would support the carrying on of the business of the Council as at preheat.

Or Ewington said that since the (Park Committee bad ceased to exist, the Park had gon e back, especially in [the lower part. He was quite convinced that good work would be done liif >a •committee were set up.

The motion was carried on the voices.

Cr O'Leary moved that a Gas Committee be set- up. He did not quite agree with the Mayor's opinion (that (committees did not tend to harmony in -the Council. There was no reason why there Should not be harimony in the Council 'now. Or Ewington favoured the motion because it would bring new Councillors more into .touch -with the affaire of.the .Gasworks.

Cns Donald, Flanagan and Temple supported tVo setting-up of a Gas Committee.

The (motion was .carried .on the voices. ■

•It was decided that the appointment of im.omb'ers of t'ho Gas and Park Committees be dealt with at next meeting of the Council.
