RED CROSS DAY

INSURANCE ACT IN FORCE

BRINGING THE MILLENIUM NEARER.

(Received July 15, 8.5 a.m.)

LONDON, July 15,

Speaking at the Kennington Theatre, the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Bight Hon. D. Lloyd-George) said he did not claim that the Insurance Act was ie Millennium, but it brought it nearer. To-morrow, when the Act comes into force, would be known in the annals of the sick and distressed as Red Cross Day. Already nine and a. half millions were members of approved societies. More members had joined friendly societies during the past few weeks than during the last twenty years. The Government would fulfil its every pledge. Newspapers note that similar meetings projected by the Liberal Insurance Committee throughout the country to. celebrate the enforcement of the Act were largely abandoned owing to the outcry against the measure. Opposition newspapers, are ridiculing the iso-called Joy Day. Over half a million workmen have applied for unemployment books, with the object of paying contributions under the Insurance Act.
