Tho Masterton County Council decided yesterday not to deal with tenders for certain work .in tho Masterton Riding, as it was considered that it was not advisable to do the work at the present season.
Only one tender was received by the Masterton County Council for 800 yards of metalling on the Wai-mata-Bhurlogie road. As this was much in excess of the engineer's estimate, the tender was declined.
Tfc was decided by tho Masterton County Council yesterday, on the motion of Or. Murray, that application be made to the Akitio County Council for a vote of £IOO for the" Waihoki road, and £l5O for tho Alfredton-Wcb-cr road.
Tho conference of tho Reform Party, which was to have been held on July 27th, in Wellington, has been postponed until Saturday, August 13th.
The adjourned inquest was held yesterday on the body of Francis Charles Marquand, a chemist's assistant, who died suddenly at Wellington over a week ago. A verdict was returned of death from morphia poisoning.
Tho Masterton County Council decided yesterday, on tho motion of C>\ Murray, that application be made to the Government for a grant of a site for a roadman's cottage at Hutewai. Cr. Percy complained at the Masterton County Council meeting yesterday that certain men employed on the County roads were not earning their wages. The Clerk stated that the fcvvices of some of the men had been dispensed with.
The Dannevirke Chamber of Commerce has decided to suggest to the Pahiatua Borough Council the holding of a convprehensive conference at Pahiatua of local bodies interested in the proposed Pongaroa railway, with a view to deciding on a definite course of action.
A six-roomed, house at Parkvillo, near Eketabuna, owned by Mr 0. Sehultz, was destroyed by fire _ on Monday night. The fire started in a bedroom where a light was left burning for the children. The insurances on the bouse amount to £3OO in the State office, and on the furniture £2OO in the Standard.
A conference of members of the Masterton and East Coast Telephone Associations was held in Masterton yesterday, to adopt rules govern nig the amalgamation of the two bodies. Mr C. F. Vallance occupied the chair. After some discussion the question was referred to another meeting.
A Wesfcport telegram states that Lionel Dorney, a fireman on board the Taviuni, fell between the wharf and the vessel on Monday night, and was drowned. The police are dragging the river for the body. A companion jumped after Dorney, but was himself recued by the crew, in a drowning condition.
At the meeting of the Masterton. County Council yesterday, a resolution was received from the Whakatane County Council, suggesting that the registration of dogs be vested only in European local authorities, and not in the bands of-Maori Councils, as well as local authorities, as at present. The Council decided to support the Whakatane resolution on the subject.
It was stated at the meeting of the Masterton County Council yesterday that the settlers of To Ore Ore intended endeavouring to procure a water supply. On the motion of Cr Percy. it was decided that the services of the County Engineer be placed at the disposal of the settlers, for the taking of preliminary levels.
About 7 o'clock vesterday morning the Ta.ranaki Oil Wells' No. 5 derrick wa destroyed by fire, caning damage to the extent of probablv £2OO. A great explosion of gas, which was felt throe miles away, occurred just before the outbreak, but bow the gas became ignited is a mystery. The nightwatohman was the only man on duty, and no naked lights were about. The well has been very active lately.
The Poverty Bav representative, hockey team arrived in Masterton yesterday afternoon. The members of the team took part in a nractice shovrIv after iheir arrival, n cratch match being nlnved with members of the. P. and T. team. The visitors are in good form, from all accounts, and are confident tbn-fc they will give the holders of the Nordon. Cup a hard cam?. The holders are also at the top of their form, so that those who visit Lansdowne to-morrow afternoon may rely on seeing an excellent game.
Councillor C. C. Kelvbe.ll suggested at the meeting of the Masterton County Council yeterday that the time had arrived when the Council should procure its own teams and purchase a road grader." The mileage of the roads was increasing every vear. and labour was becoming more difficult to procure. He thought Council, which was an important body, should bring itself into line with similar boriies in the Dominion. He moved that sub-committee consisting of Crs. Toogood. Cameron, Murray, Percy, Miller, Foreman, and the mover be set up to procure information on the ?übject. and report to next meeting. The resolution was seconded by Cr. Murray and carried.
The Napier Harbour Board has adopted a Bill for presentation to Parliament, empowering them to borrow £30,000 for reclamation works. Some fifteen years ago the Board leased a big portion of the Whare-o-Mara-nui reserve to a syndicate, who carried out expensive reclamation work in Napier South, comprising over 500 dwellings, which were erected on—the reclaimed land. There is still a big expense to be dealt with, and the proposed loan is to carry this out, and bnv out the interests of the present syndicate.
Three Waihi youths, says a Waihi telegram, who returned to their homes from the Thames on Monday evening, after serving seven days' imprisonment for breaches of the Defence Act, were met on the railway platform .bv sections of the Socialist and ante-mili-tarist parties. The boys were placed in front of a procession, which marched into the town headed by three or four instrumentalists. A red flag played a prominent part in the procession. Several speakers, including two clergymen, delivered speeches against compulsory training, and resolutions were passed congratulating the youths on their refusal to comply with the requirements of the Act.

Whales are seemingly plentiful at the entrance of the Sounds this season, says the Picton Press. No less than five were seen last week. The whaling boats chased, and J. Perano's crew fastened to one, but the iron broke, and it got away. All hope of finding the young man Leo Burnett has been abandoned, says a Hawke's Bay exchange. Burnett disappeared from a station at Waipawa some weeks ago, and although every effort was made to trace him, it was of no avail.
A prominent Napier business man and a member of the Park Racing Club is said to be contemplating legal action against the stewards for being ejected from the course at the club's last meeting, presumably because he was suspected of illegal betting. Owing to the whole of the dress circle seats having been booked for the session the Committee of the Masterton Competitions Society has decided, after numerous requests, to open the box plan for the orchestral stalls. Seats may now be booked at the Dresden at 3s each.
As the Masterton County Council has already raised a sum of £4950 by way of advances from the Advances to Settlers Office, and as the limit to be advanced is only £SOOO, certain applications by ratepayers in this district for loans for road works have Jiad to he refused.
Messrs Murray, Roberts and C-i., agents for the s. s. Wilcannia, have been advised that Charles Crisp, a middle-aged man, interested in African mining, disappeared at sea during the voyage from Melbourne to Fremantle. Crisp booked in Dtmedin, and his friends are asked for.
Four youths were each fined £2 at Cambridge yesterday, for failing to comply with the Defence Act by absenting themselves from drill and camp. One defendant said it did not pay him to leave a job at nine shillings a day, and work for the Government at four shillings.
A Mastcrton resident, who has just returned from a visit to Gisborne, states that the roads in that district are the worst in New Zealand.. .The main thoroughfares in Gisborne during the winter months are covered with mud two or three inches deep. Roads in the outlying districts are almost impassable.
A rather extraordinary case of heredited malformation has occurred on the property of Mr John Smith, of Alfredton. A few years back a calf was horn with a swallow earmark. Ihis calf has developed into a cow, which has produced a socond calf with a precisely similar ear-mark. Such cases have previously been heard of, but they are exceedingly rare.
A large meeting of miners at Millerton on Sunday evening was addressed by Mr Robert Semple, organiser for the Federation of Labour, when it was decided to boycott the Westport papers and all tradesmen who advertised with them, as a protest Against alleged misrepresentation 'by. the "capitalistic" press of the actions of the Federation and its officers.,
Messrs Thompson and Payne's star drama "Romeo and Juliet" will be shown in the Foresters' Hall tonight. To-morrow night there will be a double attraction, viz., "Attacked by-a Lion." an exciting drama of 3000 feet, in. which a ferocious lion takes a leading part, and "Honour thy Father," a pathetic drama of exceptional merit. This picture is also 3000 feet long.

Motor traffic is evidently not less severe on the roads than vehicular traffic. In hiVreport to the Masterton County Council yesterday, the engineer stated that since the advent and multiplicity of motor cars it had hecome imperative to keep up a better class of road, as where there was a weakness or lodgment of water, the road had soon become rutted or churned. The motor car, he said, was also severe on the roads in the summer seasons. Where the surface is least adhesive, the small particles which bind the stone are torn up and carried away.
