Mr Isaac Phillips, an old resident of Auckland, died last week, in his 89th; year. He was for 47 years in business in Queen Street, and retired some years ago. "
From six applications for the i osition of secretary to the' Poverty Bay A. and P. Association, Mr C. R. Spragg was appointed. Mrs H. IT.' Wolters, of Carterton, accompanied by Miss Wolters, leaves for Sydney on Friday, on an extended tour of Australia.
Mr John Gardiner Hamilton, formerly a member of the Transvaal Parliament, and who served with distinction i:i the Boer War, is dead. Mr Edward Toms, one of Palmerston's oldest and most respected resk dents, died at Wellington yesterday.
A Nelson telegram states that. Dr. James Hudson, father of Mr John Hudson, of lea, was killed onSSpoo r er's Ransto on Monday morning-" through his car skidding over an embankment. Mrs Hudson, who ac~ ; companied him, was not injured.
The South Canterbury Education Board has appointed Mi 1 W. Martin, 8.A.. B.Sc, at present instructor to the Wanganui Education Board, to the position of acrieultural instructor, at a salary of £350 a year and travelling expenses.
On Saturday night, Mr Parkes, who is leaving Mauriceville. was made the recipient of a presentation in tliß. shape of a handsome silver-mounted umbrella, by his fellow club members. Mr Parkes feelingly responded. Occasion was taken to present < the trophy, a silver shaving set, kindly given by the firm of Messrs S. and W. Mackay, Masterton. Several members congratulated Mr Parkes on his keenly-fought and well-earned win.
