j Tihe .second annual festival under tho J 'auspices of the iMasterton Competi- { tions Society opens to-day. The entries received ifor the cciropetitioms are 'highly satisfactory, and considerable , enthusiasm: is being displayed by 'those directly and indirectly concerned. The effect of these com petitions •is so distinctly beneficial as to appeal 'to all sections of the community. Youttig and old alike are inspired by Teats of emulation, and cultivate a taste for those pursuits which go to make life nobler, happier and better. The development of latent literary and elocutionally talent is m itself a sufficient reward for all the trouble involved an the promotion,of the festii val.
