Miss A. A. White, a competitor at next week's Masterton competitions, arrived from Auckland yesterday. The death is reported at Grey town of Mrs Gates, wife of Mr Samuel Gates, at the age of sixty-nine years. Mr G. K. Sykes, M.P., was unable to take his place in the House < n one or two nights of this week, owing to indisposition. A Sydney cable states that the reception at Parliament House yesterday to the Right Hon. James Bryce .was largely attended.
Mr C. N. Bneyertz and Mr Harold Gregson, the judges at the Competitions next week, will arrive in Masterton on Monday evening.
The Hon. J. A. Millar proceeded to Wellington last night. As soon as the division on the no-confidence motion is over, he will return to Rotorua.
One of the pioneer settlers of the Wairarapa, in the person of MiThomas Wiggins, passed away at Greytown yesterday at the ripe age or 90 years.
Mrs Benge, senr., of Greytown, who is 92 .years of age, had the misfortune recently to break a thighbone. Despite her great age, the old lady is progressing satisfactorily.
Should His Excellency the Governor be able to come to Masterton to be present at the Competitions, of which Society he is Patron, ho will he the guest of Mr and Mrs W. H. Becthani, of Perry Street.
Mr J. Duncan, ex-member for Wai. ran, was entertained by his supporters at a banquet on Thui'sday night, and presented with an illuminated address. Mrs Duncan was presented with a silver roso bowl.
Mrs Grainey, who died on Tuesday at Wellington, was the daughter of Mr William Shearer, one of the old New Zealand whalers. She was born at his whaling camp. Kapiti Island, and next day she and her mother were taken by canoo to Tetahi (Porirua). She has ever since resided in Wellington.
The friends of the Rev. E. T. Olds, of Masterton, will regret to hear that on Thurselay he became suddenly ill, and it was found necessary to remove him to the local hospital. He is suf fering from an internal complaint. His condition yesterday was reported to he somewhat improved. Another of the pioneers of the FortyMile Bush has passed away, in the person of Mr Samuel Priest, senr., whose death occurred at the house of his daughter (Mrs Campbell) at Wanganm on Wednesday. The deceased, who was seventy-nine years of age, followed farming pursuits for a number of years in the Eketahuna district. He leaves a family of grown-up sons, who reside at Eketahuna.
The following marriage notice appears in a contemporary, and is of interest to Wairarapa people.—On June 12th, at St. Matthew's Church, Auckland, by the Rev. W. E. Gillam, assisted by the Rev. C. J. Fussell, George Philip Armstrong, of Morrinsville, eldest son of the late P. J. Armstrong, of Carterton, to Edith Eliza* beth, only daughter of the late Edward Lyttelton, of London, and Mrs Lyttolton, of Melbourne, Australia.
A Nelson telegram announces the death of Mr Eugene Jaseph O'Connor, at the age of 78. In the earlier times the. deceased gentleman was a prominent figure in public life, when he was known as the "Buller Lion." He was Provincial Grand Secretary of Nelson, and when the Provincial Government was abolished, he was elected M.H.R. for Buller in 1874. With brief intervals he held the seat until 1903. Of late Mr O'Connor has been living a retired life at Nelson.
