UNIVERSITY EDUCATION.
•'Sir' Robert Stout,'. Chancellor of. the : is*.Z. , University, speaking in Auckland the other day, stated that "our young people ought to know something •of history if they were |.to be efficient fcdtizenis, and if they wis'he dio make their country great/' Proceeding, he said that "the time must come when in mxv social life we would demand that ' our social loaders is.lh.ould bo able and educated men, as well as men inspired with a Hove of their fellow-men." This is nllil very nice in theory. Bub the Matrxinian and Democratic ideals are for a levelling-down'.'instead! of. a level! ihig-ujp. These, ideals presume an 'equality in education and wealth, and an equality df opportunity. Tho popular idea is that if a man be possessed of ibrains and culture, he is an enemy ito the commonwealth. While this is l so, there is little, hope of our social leadiers 'being able and educated men. |" ,
