"WHAT THE MOON SAW"
AT THE TOWN HALL. * The eale of -work, "What;the Moon Saw,"-' inauguratetf~by the members of the Presbyterian Church in Lahsdowne and surrounding district, with .the object of raising funds for the furnishing of the proposed new Lansdowne Church, was opened yesterday afternoon, in the Masterton Town Hall.
Mr G. R. Sykes, M.P. performed the opening ceremony, and in a, few words referred to the very deserving object of the functfom. He also remarked upon the presence of the clergy >of other" denominations, which indicated the good feeling that existed ibetween the various churches. He also paid a, tribute to the ladies who had worked so hard; to make the sale of work .the success it deserved to be, ja,tid the energy and ■time which they, had expended l in arranging the fainc•tion .augured well for the future prospects of the Lansdowne Presbyterian Church.
The Hall was laiu cut and arranged in a most artiistiic manner, 'and the vari-coloured attire of 'the My attendantsS formed a refreshing cambrast to the floral and other decorations throughout the building, the whole going to make up a, very charming and beautiful scene. The various and prettily airranged l stalls, under the management of ladies dbessed xo (represent .foreigni nations, attracted a d?ail of attention from tb.e large crowds present, and a thriving business 1 'was kept iip> during the afternoon and evening. Tea and .refreshments were dispensed amidst realistic Japanese eurroundingis, iby a charming hand of Geisfos. The following were the stalls and the lady aatendants:— Bran Tub, "South Pole,,'.' Mins A. J. Cooper and Miss Formtan ; fancy stall, "Dutch," Mosses J. Anderson and Wall; plain sewing, "Welsh," Mesdames C. Lett and Baar; .sweets, '"Egypt," Mesdames Cray and Constable; flower stall, "Tropics," Mrs R. McKenzie; produce, "Oiina," Mesdamas MoHattie, Lett and Gazeley; .brain tub, "North Pole," Mrs Gosnell and Mies Millar; tea room, "Japanese," iMesdames East, Hart, Compton, B. B. Eayner, .assisted, by Mi-s©£i9 Compton, Rayner, McPhee, Ackerman, Douglas, and East.
In the evening an .excellent programme of vocal and .musical items, and dancing, was submitted, 'and the large attendance showed their appreciation by prolonged applause. The Highland* dancing cf the Sutheriahid children was a feature of the programme, while Mr Harry Hall sung in" splendid voice. The following, is the .programme:—/ Highland' Fling, Little Essie Sutherland ;• song, MiHarry Hall; song, Miss Anderson ; recitation, Mr E. «'Ri. Wilson; comic duet, Messrs Hall and Parker; dance, Master Donald (Sutherland; song, Mastar Stephen Bishop. His Worship the Mayor presided. The .sale of work will be continued this afternoon, and evening, and another well selected programme will be rendered in the evening.
