THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. SATURDAY, MAY 18, 1912. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The Masterton Chamber of Conumorce is a useful institution, but its influence could be greatly increased if its membership. were enlarged, and if its meetings were held monthly, instead of quarterly. The roll stands at present at about thirty or under, and the Executive consists of about a dozen members, elected as a Council, with a President and VicePresident. The Council practically carries on the whole business. The quarterly general meeting may be termed more or Ices a superfluity, as seldom, do more than two or three imembers oth&r than the Council put in. an appearance. Yesterday's meeting only supplied one extra member outside the Council. Ordinary members are not altogether to blame .or mot taking a more lively interest in the affairs of the Chamber. Three month® is far too long a term .'between meetings, and monthly meetings of the whole Chamber should take place, instead of confining such meetings to the Council. By adopting this suggestion, ifc would be found that members would talke a livelier interest in the commercial affairs of the town and the advancement of the general interests- of the district. The annual subscript ion is one guinea, and few bu'siness people would object to the payment of that sum; hu<fc the membership ought to be largely increased, so as to proyide a revenue to enable the Chamber to expend reasonable smuis oF money in furthering the interests of the di&fcrict. The Chamber has a nest egg which it seems to be very proud of, but whkh is evidently addled, as the Council considered it of no use but to look at. We should like to see the Council put this money out at interest in the way of expenditure in the direction of improving the trade relations with the surrounding country, and our seaport of Wellington. If the Chamber will popularise the institution by holding meetings more frequently, the membership will

incrcr.ee. and they will create more funds, and still further extend the usefulness of the Chamber of Commerce.
