A SURPRISE ATTACK TURKS DRIVEN' BACK. ITALIAN WARSHIPS CO-OPERA-TJXG. (Received Last Night, 9.45 o'clock.) ROME, May 6. A squadron composed of the' Vittorio Emannele, Regina Elena. Napoli and Roma left Hamphalia on Friday, with lights out, and at half speed .steamed to the Island of Charki, ten miles west of Rhodes. Another squadron followed conveying the landing forces numbering 8000, and all concentrated at two a m. Arriving at Rhodes at 3.30 a section of the fleet:made a demonstration at rhe harbour, while another section guarded the disembarkation in a. bay eight miles to the-south of the town

The Turkish troops did not appear, and the warships did not fire a shot. The Turks withdrew to a plateau five miels to the south west of Rhodes, where Admiral Amedlio immediately attacked them, in order to prevent them withdrawing to the centre of the Island.

Several bayonet charges were rade by the Italians, who had five wounded. Fifty Turkish prisoners wore taken. The lurlys are no w on a small peninsnlfc to the north of the Island.
