DEMAND OF UNIONS.
The Trades Council Conference in Wellington has passed, a resolution asking the Government to employ only members of Trades Unions when, engaging, casual labour. This is a. very nice rcquct. A ma", fc: i::. f t;u^c,
•who is taken on to collect census statistics must be-long to a Census union! The returning officer at a. general election must belong to a Rxv ifcurning Officers' Union! The casual Inspector cf Noxious Weeds must be t member of the Noxious Union! When relief works are found for the unemployed, those engaged must.-be-long to the Unemployed Union! And eo on. The compliance with the request would produce delightful jiomen clatiure, if nothing more. But why should not a. law uo passed compelling everybody to belong to a. union to be registered a« "Everybody's Union!" In case of strike there would then be nobody left to do anything except to .starve.
