THE MAORI'S SALVATION.

The new Native Minister states that the salvation of the Maori race re&ts in work. He is gratified to learn from the Governor's Speech ..that assistance is to be given the Natives to utilise their estates. From this expression it would appear that tho Hon Te Rangihiroa regards the Governor's Speech as binding upon the Ministry of which he forms a part. The "rest cure" (advocated by tho Prime Minister in his Taranaki speeches does not quite justify the Native Minister in his expectations. All the same, the fact remains- that the Native race is being impoverished through want of work, and the country is being made to suffer through large areas of Native lands being locked up. The "taihoa" policy has been disastrous to the morale of the Maori, and has seriously impeded the;progress of national development. If the Prime Minister does not deal' promptly, and effectively with the Native lands, -he will have to make room for somebody else who will. '
