HUKANUI SPORTS

SECOND ANNUAL MEETING

(By Our Special Reporter)

The above popular sports meeting took place on the beautiful grounds at Hukanui yesterday. Contrary to | expectations the weather was fine, and above five hundred settlers and visitors, were present. Great dissatisfaction expressed by the refusal of a permit for several of the horse events, and the gallops and trots had j to be eliminated from the programme. J However, things turned out well, and I a good day's outing was spent byi both the public and competitors. The I hunting competitions provided excel-1 lent jumping. Mr J. Sweeney's Salta- \ tion scored a double, winning both the ladies and gentlemen's competitions. Mr Sweeney was •'afterwards presented with a silver rose bowl, valued at £l2 10s, to bo won twice in succession or three times at intervals. The presentation was made by Mrs Mowbray, of Hukanui, who complimented the winner. The running events were scooped by Jim Galvin. v of Hukanui, wTio secured four wins and a second. He was conceding big handicaps to the limit men, and his performances yesterday show that he is at the top of his form. Great interest was manifested in the wrestling events. Mr W. Higgins, of Masterton, gave a superior exhibition of catch-as-catch-can. Much praise is due to the general secretaries (Messrs Gregory and Harrington) who performed their duties admirably.
