The autumn meeting of the Masterton Racing Club opened yesterday, under most favourable circumstances. The weather, which) was threatening on the previous night, broke beautifully fine, and t!nis induced a large gathering, visitors being present from all partis of the district. The course was in splendid order, and the racing was good throughout. The arrange- | mentis were complete in almost every [detail, the absence of a Press stewlard being about the only thing to be 'remarked. Tine new silent totalisator was worked for'the'first.time, and was liberally patronised; The secretary A. J. jEQathaway) and the | whole 'of the stewards worked assiduously. Taken on the whole, the racing was well .up"to the standard. The fields were large through- | out, and some of the finishes were exciting, 'ine Cup race brought out a field of ten, and was warmly contested, the finish being exceedingly dose. The best performer in the race was undoubtedly Golden _ Loop, who, after being left badly at the post, ran St. Felix to a head for second place. The Bracelet was- won. in fine style by Mr Arthur Hyde on Elfish. The March Handicap was won by Te Rbtd from a field of seven. The last event bf the day produced one of 'the biggest dividends that have been token off the (machine for a long time, Mr D. Etude's Gbklsley winning unexpectedly frtam a large field. The ltotftiilisator investments amounted to no less than £9208 for the day, which. is an increase of £2519 on the firsfc day of last year. Following were the results:—

NOTES ON THE RACING.
Proceedings were opened with the Maiden, in which two-year-olds Mere ■eligible to start. The public selected the two-year-old Day break as a good thing, with Karoro and Madeira also well backed. Daybreak was first away, and won mirly comfortably froni Miss Roberts, who finished fast, j with the well bred Pantliea close up. | The March Handicap went to Te Roti, who won the srme race bust year. " R'angiatua- and Dirge were heavily .supported, and the latter, who was rather sore, ran a good race, but Rangiatua, who looked well, was not •prominent. Negative was the unlucky kor.se in the race, and ought to have ■won., as was proved by his running la--1 tor.
The Master ton Hiaok was- Avon by ■the grey gelding Mira, cf whom good tilings were expected In the- .beginning c.\i the season, but who never ran • up to expectations. Ho finished well, and onght to go on winning. Lord Itonov.n, a recent- winner, was the • -public fancy, and a.ft.cr writing out the running with Ki.ngf,.voll, dropped [back. Black Reef finished fast, and \vilth anv luck might.have won. "in the .YV.ia;;p'pi : Cup, ten horses faced the starter, and i,he public went 'strongly fer San Pluie, who was reported to have done a great gallop, prior to leaving Hastings. lined up. The start was the worst of tilie day, Elfish and Goodform, the favourite, going to the front. Matapouri ran a good race for • mile, and stopped over the last part oif tlie journey. Elfish had no difficulty in wining from Plrince Eddie, who ftnislhed fast, and should be capable of better things in the future. Negative, Master Sylvia and Afterthought were all, wed supported in tho Opaki Welter, and the public once more .proved the bc*t judges, a-s tho trio filled the places. Deeley tried to win from end to end, but the Merriwee mare was not equal to stalling off Negative and Muster Sylvia. Emerson was seen to advantage on the favourite, and timed bis run to a nicety. Royal Miariiio had a lot of support, but was not able to pace it with the placed horses. ■Fifteen, starters faced the barrier in itlhe last race Of the day, and after a lot of trouble at the .start, the field were let go in a strung out line, with Gay Lawless out in front. The \ 3Jet3he mare seemed to have the race | in safe keeping, but she stopped bad-1 ly, and Golds ley,, coming with a rat-: tie, cut her out of fir..* place by a long neck. Leapuki ran a good race, a'nd Ariatiatia, who was heavily backed, finished last; Ladino, Miss Augusta and M'bkara were the best backed of the others, but were not sighted.
