BOROUGH COUNCIL
ORDINARY MEETING.
The ordinary meeting of fine* Masterton Borough Council was held last evening, in the Borough Council Chambers, there being present,— His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine>, Crs. H. J. O'Leary, J. Elliott, F. W. Temple, T. G. Hoar, W. Candy, W. Pragnell, J. O. Ewington, J. P. Prentice and A. Donald. An application was received for a license to run a box-ball, alley, from a person whose application was considered at last meeting of the Council, when it was decided not to grant, the license, on account of an unfavourable police report. The applicant stated that he'-was earning'9s a day for labouring work, which was not sufficient to maintain a wife and family of eight children. It was decided, on the motion of Cr Temple, and seconded by Or Elliott, that the Council could not see its way to a-lrter ite previous decision*

Inspector Hugo, of the' Fire Board, ] stated, that a similar by-law was in. force in other parts of the country, \ and it would be-advisable for a bj law to this effect to be passed. The' Mayor thought that, as bydaws were being dra\rti up by the Council, it would be as well to have the .by-Taw under discussion drawn up als'o, and as it no doubt would be. of gi-eat assistance to firemen in the performance of their duty; and he moved that a by-law be drawn up as suggested by- the Fire Board.
Or .Elliott seconded the' motion, which was carried.
A letter was received from -Mr Donald Donald, of Masterton, with reference to- a land transaction carried out between the Council and Mr Donald, and asking that"".the titJe of the transfer be drawn up. > The Town Clerk wias instructed to place the matter in the hands of the firm of Messrs Gawith and Logan for completion.
The proposed by-law ;<o regulate the motor ear. and motor cycle traffic ■lvifahin- the Borough was before the Council, ' and was discussed at length. It was- decided that the -speed- of 12 miles an hour be reduced-to 10 miles an hour. ...
A discussion as to the position of the stands in t»e streets for motors for Lire took place, and it was decided to leave the matter to a committee consist™ gof Ors Jswington and Prentice, to decide which would he the ,m/ost suitable stands.
The "by-law will be further discussed at tlic next meeting. The G-as Manager's report was read and adopted.
