A DOCTOR SAND-BAGGED.

AN AUCKLAND INCIDENT,

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, Sunday. Di\ James Moir, a well-known doctor of Auckland, was, sandbagged and robbed on Friday night. He was going to attend a patient in Carlton Gore Road, about 10 p.m., and was found unconscious at one o'clock on Saturday morning. He is making good progress towards recovery.

A telephone message was received by Mrs Moir, and the person giving the message left instructions 1 rthat-itSie. doctor: was-not' to. go ..round Hintil 10jo'clbck iivthe evemngas the; patient was" coming .'from the country: and .would riot arrive until then.'.. * ..At tlie appointed tforie Dr. Moir left ■for" #he tfou'se'y'walk'fng "hi "'the' > cenire of the footpath, When, glancing over tilie road he saw a man emerge from behind a tree, and after proceeding | further the doctor heard footstep's- behind him. Then tihe man caught up to the doctor who moved aside to allow him to pass. Suddenly the man swerved towards the doctor and administered a crushing blow, and the doctor fell to , the ground unconscious. •A little after 11 p.m. a young man ■going home tumbled over the doctor, wdio was lying on the footbath. ..After ascertaining the doctor's identity, the newcomer procured assistance, and he was removed to his home, where he regained consciousness. His injuries are not regarded as serious.

It seems certain that the doctor was sandbagged, as there is no outward sign of a blow. Investigations.indicate that the telephone message must, have been a bogus one. The object"of'the assault is a mystery as Dr. Moir never carries valuables at night. He had in his pockets only 2s 6d (whieOi was taken), and a cheap watch, which was left. The police-so far have not got a chic.

Two young ladies were chased by ;i man in the same locality on the same evening, but readied a house, exhausted, but safe.
