DEATH OF AN ALFREDTON SETTLER
(Special to the Age.) Quite a painful sensation was experienced in Alfredton on Saturday night, when word was received from Palmerston of tho death of Mr W. H. Oates, a young and highly respected settler of the district. The late Mr Oates' death, which was quite unexpected, occurred from a relapse after an apparently successful operation. The shock to his friends was all the more pronounced on account of a great many of them being unaware that he was suffering from any illness. The deceased leaves a father and mother, Mr and Mrs Joseph Oates, of Parkvale, Carterton; two sisters, Misses Annie and Amy, of the same place, and a brother, Mr Percy Oates, of "Waihakeke, to mourn their loss. The late Mr Oates, who was about thirty years of age, had farmed in the Alfredton district for some year,?, and during that time, through a quiet and genial disposition, had made a host of friends.
