MRS PANKHURST SENTENCED TO TWO MONTHS IMPRISONMENT. (Received March 4, 8.40 a.m.) LONDON, March 3. Mrs Pankihurst was sentenced to two imomtihs' imprisonment, and several others ranging from fourteen days to two months. The majority of those arrested were remanded or committed for trial for doing damage of over £IOO each. MAGISTRATE'S COMMENT. IF INEFFECTIVE, LAW MUST BE AMENDED. In sentencing Mrs Pankhurst, the Magistrate said tihe suffragettes had 'broughtt the country to a state which •would not be allowed in any civilised laiid. If the law was ineffective, it must be amended.
OUTCRY AGAINST DEMONSTRATIONS. NEWSPAPERS URGE HEAVIER PUNISHMENT. (Received March 4, 9.5 a.m.) LONDON, March 3. There is an outcry against the suffragettes' demonstnaltaons. The .newspapers urge tQio prosecution of suffragettes under the Conspiracy Act, which provides heavy punishments. Mr E. . Fordbain, the well-known London magistrate, complains of the tendency of magistrates to inflict Hghtt punishments on offending suffragettes. ORGANISATION FUNDS LIABLE. Newspapers, discussing the suffragette raid, suggest that the Conspiracy Act enaiMes the recovery of damages from the funds of the orgajiisartaort directing tlie raid equally with, the chattels of tlhe individual raiders. A suffragette was arrested on Sunday nighjt for dropping on the floor of the telegraph department of the General Post Office, Ronnanibartfli Street, a basket of blazing shavings, saturated with paraffin. It is understood as a preuMe to an organised series of outrages on Post Offices.
