WIN THE FIFTH TEST MATCH
BY SEVENTY RUNS
A BOWLER'S WICKET.
(Received Last Night, 7.5 o'clock.)
SYDNEY, March 1. That it was at all possible to play today speakes volumes for the recuperative powers of Sydney wickets. Yesterday the ground was virtually a lake of water. The sun shone in the morning, and a steady: breeze had a wonderful effect, although when play was resumed at ten minutes to one, it-was purely a bowler's wicket, being sticky, and almost every ball bumped high. Armstrong and Minnett resumed to Woolley and Barnes. Both ibatsmeu played with great oa.re, and scored 9 in 20 miirates before lunch. After the interval the wicket was somewhat better, but still sticky in patches. Armstrong added 10 to his overnight score, and then hit out at a" yorker from Barnes, and was bowled. The partnership yielded 92 runs under the most unfavourable conditions. Ramsford started by lifting Woolley to the track, but the same bowler broke his wicket after the Victorian had added 9. Minnett played very carefully, being intent on keeping up the wicket, while the piteh improved. When he had scored 61, in 1'32 minutes, he out Barnes hard to Woolley, at second slip, who made an extraordinary catch, the ball travelling fast and low at the extremity of his reach to his left. Ho darted his hand down and held the ball, and fell over with ;fche effort. ?;
Minnett hail hit 9'fours. :.-; Macartney and Carter then camo together, and'brought up 250 as the result of 281 minutes play. Knocks relieved Wool lev for two overs, but 1/ runs were knocked off them, so Woolley was put back, and Foster took the other end from Barnes. _ The score was carried to 2*B by Macartney, who had scored ,27. Then lie hit at a rising iball from Foster, which went straight to Woolley at fine-leg, and the catch was accepted. •X couple of overs later, Carter having scored 23. played exactly a similar stroke to Macartney's, and the Australians' most optimistic supporters ga,ve up hope. , Hordern and Hazlitt were in at tea time, but almost immediately on resuming Hordern was run out by a clever returnby Hobbs. ..,. Hazfitt was very shaky, and.hit an easv one to Rhodes.at square-teg- ott. Foster, and England had won by <U runs. , McLaren was again the not out mart. Australia had undoubtedly the worst of the weather conditions. Scores: —• ENGLAND. ■•'"'=, TV J. • ' • V. ?,*£' Fast miliums •'.^..
