BOROUGH COUNCIL
ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary fortniglitly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening, there being present, His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine), Ors. H. J. O'Leary, T. Hoar, W. Pragnell, J. Elliott, F. W. Temple, and J. Candy.
A letter was read from the convener of the committee formed for the purpose of recognising the generosity of Mr W. C. Buchanan, M.P., in presenting the Buchanan Home at Greytown, inviting the Council to be represented at a meeting to be held on the 6th March.
It was decided, on- the motion of Cr Temple, seconded by Or O'Leary, that His Worship the Mayor represent the Council.
A letter was received from the owner of a house in Pine Street, which building was reported at last meeting of t'ho Council as being unfit for habitation, stating that the owner was waiting for a further report from- the District Health Officer. A letter was received from Wellington in connection with the Workers' Compensation Act, notifying the Council of the increased charges for insuring the Council's employees. The Wairarapa Amateur Swimming Club wrote, asking the Council to reduce the ■ charge for the use of the Park on 22nd January last, when the Club's swimming sports "resulted in a loss.— Cr Candy moved, and Or Elliott seconded, that the amount be reduced by £lO. This was agreed to, pending a balance sheet being presented with the Club's statement of Expenses, loss, etc. A letter was read from a ratepayer, a widow, who had to support three children, asking the cancellation of her rates, as she was not in a position to pay them. — Or Temple moved, and the Mayor seconded, that the rates be struck off.—Carried.
A letter was received, from Mr Blackman, the Gas Manager, applying for an increase in salary. decided, on the motion of Or Temple, to call a special meeting, at which Mr Blackmaai would be invited to be present, wihen the whole administration of the Gasworks could "be gone into, and the application would be considered at the same time. : A letter was received from the Master ton County Council in reference to the upkeep and expenses of the Pound. > After considerable discussion, it was decided, on the motion of the Mayor, to instruct.the Town Clerk to draw up an account of the expenses in connection with the Pound for the past-twelve months, and to notify the i County Council that unless that body was prepared to pay its- share of the I cost, the Borough Council would sev- ( er their connection with the County Council, as far as the" Pound was! concerned, the motion to take effect from 31st" March, 1912.
'Messrs Thompson and Payne, picture proprietors, wrote, stating that "they had received the Council's'' instructions regarding the improvements to be effected in the Foresters' Hall for the - prevention of fire, and that all the work, "as recommended by the Fire Inspector, was now in hand, and would very shortly be completed. —The Mayor moved, and Cr Hoar seconded, that the letter be forwarded to the Fire Board for their immediate perusal.— Carried. . The County Council wrote asking for a progress payment, towards the work on the northern approach.— Cr '•Hoar moved that the County Council be informed that no more money would be granted until the Borough Council were informed what steps were to be taken for the widening of the first bridge. Cr Pragnell seconded the motion, which was carried. -
