WOOLLEY UNCONQUERED
(Received Last Night, (i.50 o'clock.) SYDNEY, February 25.
Heavy rain fell during the night, but tho"wicket was not seriously affected, being slow and easy. Wool ley and Vine resumed to the bowliug of Macartney and Haxlitt. Wool ley added one, and. then gave an. easv chance to Gregory at point, off Hazlitt, but tho ball slipped right through Iris hands. After feeling the bowling ,however, ho played 1 greater freedom than yesterday. Two hundred and fifty was brought up 1,1 302 minutes. Woolley batted confidently and brought up his centliry in 151 minutes. After trying Hordern and Armstrong, the two slow bowlers togethei, Hill put on McLaren and Minnett, both fast bowlers. Woolley and Minnett wcro still together at tbo luncheon adjournment, with tho score 292 foi six wickets. After lunch Hordern and Hazlitt attacked. The former, in his fourth over, saw the partnership, wluch had added 143, broken by Vine being bowled. H e batted 147 minutes tor 36 runs. ' _ Smith was bowled with tho second hall —a "googlie," which evidently ho did not understand.
Barnes \v-as next, and at,,<s cut a twisting one from Hazlitt; iand Hoixlcrn, at point, made the catch. Gregory ami Trumper opened to tlio' bowling of Barnes and Foster. The first ball of Barnes's second over Trumper tipped to Wooliey, at third, man, and a good catch resulted, al- y most on the ground. When Armstrong went in, the play slowed down, 22 only being added before Gregory, in attempting to cut Douglas, sent the ball straight to Gunn, at fine slip. Mimiett followed, and was out before scoring, and . tho Australian's chiinco looked gloomy. .Ransford filled the breach, and tho two Victorians carried tho score to 100 in 113 minutes. Play was dull, both displaying great caution. Ransford, however, opened out to Foster, whom he lifted to the track. The next ball he pidled to leg. Three quarters of an hour before time Armstrong was out leg-before to Barnes.7-6 for 134. • Tho light had become bad, and stumps were drawn for tho day. The attendance was 28,000. Y/e"£i£ta>; was resumed on the Basin Reserve on.Saturday, in,fine weather. The attendance in the afternoon was large, and the wicket w«.s wearing very well. Wellington made 252 in their first innings, and l«it for Hemus and Somerville, would have dismissed Auckland for much less than the 253 put up.
