POULTRY NOTES

(By Utilitarian.)

The majority of poultry owners v, ill bo pcsseJscd of pullets, at this period, of varying ages, from tho.': 1 already laying or just about to, to F onie down' to a month old or even less. To obtain the greatest •pr .■his from these it is important that they should bo classified ; that is, have ah those of equal development, r.jt ncecssarilv age, ulacccl tog?-her, aid -.he .backward' ones will iMmost at u.ec forge ahead and make up, to a o-reat extent, lest time. Wh.-ii Iml"n.r strain to them, scatter it well, so that'all will get equal chances oi .1 siifficier.cv. Ducks, ospei- <v l-M'-h----v,-ard ducklings, should have good lengthy troughs, to enable the lot to feed at once. Some breeders use, lor | this purple, ordinary flat sheets of corrugated iron laid on the ground. !This is an .excellent plan, though not ' so neat a:ul tidy as trough feeding. j Co-operation—how it hums through the commercial world in these days! A Wellington contemporary is devot- _ ing of late some considerable space to 'the question as affecting poultrymeu, and asks that someone will formulate j some definite scheme of action which' can .he discussed in tho near future. What is wrong with ogg circles? .Nothing, except the lack of •onthusiasm necessary for their further and fuller development. Let these be established throughout tho Dominion and amalgamated, .having each its own delegate to represent it at the annual Poultry Conferences. This will give poultry-men tho needful opportunity of meeting together to farther the co-operative movement. In almost every industry we see Conferences being he-id to create cohesion of action, the general amalgamation of various bodie., that have .been on their own, for they knew, full well, that when a few sticks tied together are stronger' than one, the greatest strength is only available when every stick or unit is in the one bundle. Egg circles cannot bo said to have succeeded or yet to have failed, for they are net general enough to show I what can or cannot be achieved through their existence. Every poultry keeper, who believes in co-operation, should subscribe his half crown, to the New Zealand Poultry Association, which will entitle him to membership for tho current year. The proprietor of the Utility Poultry .Farm is already receiving orders for breeding stock for the coming season. First come, first pick, is the order of the day, on that plant. I Losses of eggs on the road (between here and 'Wellington are ' reported, from time to time. Sometimes a deficiency of quantity, : and at-others loss through 'breakages. ■• Carriers, and railway officials, need to pay a I little more respect to the handling of | such perishable articles as eggs, and j if any pilfering is taking place, as indications warrant one in believing, | it shows a very petty, mean, con--1 temptible sort of spirit. Eggs have been cheap enough of late without any more inroads, being made out of the poultryman's ipocket; and punishment, in cases of this nature, should ,be meted out, not only on the value of the ' purloined article, but something over and above added for meanness. Cockerels for marketing for table can b© improved by tlie addition cf a little 'finely-ground maize-meal in

their mash, care being taken to start ■with an almost minute portion, and gradually increasing 'the quantity as the birds become accustomed to the change oif food. Ducklings, also are much benefited by it. Poultry are most conservative in their habits, and do not relish sudden changes, in ispito of many writers who advocate change of food and plenty of it. A striking illustration of their conservatism was seen in this district a week or two ago. A number of "weaned" chickeW never having been taken right away.from the ibrooder in which they were reared, were found dead, having perished with the heavy rain. The THIS IS TO CERTIFY "I have used Chamberlain's Colic and Diarrhoea Remedy, and found it to be a most valuable medicine. I have not only used it for myself but for members of my family, and have recommended it to dozens of friends. In fact I cannot say too much in favour of Chamberlain's Colic and Diarrhoea Remedy." owner, in order to prevent tliem entering the .brooder any more, closed nil the openings, naturally thinking the birds would find shelter for themselves, seeing there was plenty of it, hut no—rather than leave their old haunts they huddled up against the sides of the brooder and there ended | their troubles. [ Poultry keepers desirous of joining the egg circle are strongly advised to become members of one .which is affiliated with the parent body, the N.Z. Poultry .Association. It costs the member no more, and sometimes less, and while poultrymen are so scattered a community, it is necessary to strengthen the industry .by every unit obtainable, and not to witness the creation of a number of small bodies working individually instead of collectively. Individual bodies mean competition and weakness, collectivism 'builds for strength and the uplifting of the industry to a .status in commerce not hitherto achieved.
